The Joy of Making Others Happy
66If you'd really like to add more happiness to your own life, many times the fastest way to accomplish this is to simply make somebody else happy. The act of doing something nice for somebody else, whether it is a relative, a friend or even a total stranger, can provide you with a "happiness boost" that can last a surprisingly long time. Sometimes even the simplest act of kindness or thoughtfulness is all it takes to really make another person's day. If you'd like to increase your overall happiness level, here are a few "acts of kindness" that you can try.
Random Acts of Kindness
Sometimes it's the smallest and simplest things in life that can create the most happiness. As you go about your daily life, keep your eyes open for opportunities to do small acts of kindness for other people. Something that might seem to be a small insignificant gesture could even have the power to change a person's life. That dollar bill you give to a homeless person standing on the side of the road with a cardboard sign might seem insignificant to you, but it could make the difference between being hungry and having something to eat to that person. It can also be fun to surprise people with kind acts, such as paying for yourself as well as the person in the car behind you at the tollgate. Even an act as simple as picking up a dropped item for another person or holding the door open for them can make both you and the other person feel good.
Giving the Gift of Time
In today's busy world, giving a bit of your time to another person can be a very welcome gift. Spending some time visiting an aging relative at a nursing home or taking a child to the ice cream stand doesn't cost much. But, the time you give to the other person is often priceless. Even the simplest visit or a quick trip could have the ability to add a lot of joy to the life of another. It can also be nice to take a few photos of your time spent together, placing the photos in picture frames so that both of you have a small memento of your happy day.
Reliving Old Memories
Helping another person relive an old memory is also a great way to bring joy to their life. For example, if your mother always speaks fondly of visiting a certain city or attraction, plan a trip to take her there. Of course, take a few photos on your trip so that she can place her cherished memories in unique picture frames when you get home. Or, simply spend the afternoon looking through photo books together, as a way of reliving pleasant events and memories from the past. It can also be fun to share photos, especially if the other person expresses an interest in one that you have. You could even surprise the other person by making them their own copies of the photos they especially liked. Make your gift even more special by putting them in wood picture frames. You might be surprised at how touched the other person will be by your kind act.
