If your interest in photography has you dreaming of photography as a career or a part-time job, it may be easier than you think to make that dream come true. Portrait photography is a great fit for a home based business because you can start with minimal equipment and build your photography arsenal as your business grows. The demand for portrait photography stretches across the country so no matter where you live you are only a few steps away from following your dream.

Setting Up a Home Studio

Before you open up your portrait photography business there are a few basic needs and considerations. The first necessity is a camera. A digital camera is best for a home studio because editing is quick, easy and inexpensive. A laptop with photo editing software would be a valuable tool to make your work run more quickly and smoothly. You will need to invest in a tripod, basic lighting equipment and light reflectors. With imagination you can improvise some of your equipment, like a white poster board for a low cost light reflector, but entry level quality equipment is available for a low cost.

Next, you need to consider your work area. Do you have an extra room or an insulated garage or can you carve space out of a den or living room? You just need to be sure the space you choose will hold all your equipment. Consider lighting when you choose your space. White walls are a natural reflector and windows provide natural light. You can improvise backgrounds by using sheets or table cloths for different colors or subtle patterns.

Setting up Your Business

Now that your dream of having a portrait photography business is close to becoming a reality, you need to consider your business needs so you start off organized and on the right track. Installing small business software on your computer will keep you organized so you are ready to go before you book your first client. You will be able to generate invoices and then track payments. It is essential to track payments for tax purposes as your business grows or to help recognize if your pricing structure needs adjusting.

The Internet can be your business friend. With so many people nowadays using the Internet to search for professional services, creating your own website would be a valuable business building tool. If you don’t have the expertise to build a website yourself, there are freelance online businesses you can hire to build it for you to your specifications.

Now that you have your photography equipment and your portrait studio and business set up you need to figure out how to distinguish your business from all the rest. If you are great at photographing children or pets, you have a valuable talent and can fill a niche that makes you stand out. When you specialize in one area of portrait photography, chances are you will have less competition than if you didn’t specialize.

Another thing to consider as you build your photography business, is to think about other businesses you can partner with to grow your business. For example, as a portrait photographer, most of your customers will be shopping for picture frames. So, consider looking for an online picture frame store that offers an affiliate program where you can make a percentage of the sale. Or, as you begin to focus on other types of photography like wedding photography think about partnering with your local bakery, florist and wedding gown store.

You should now feel secure in spreading your wings and moving into professional portrait photography. With a little advertising in local papers and word of mouth from friends, family and satisfied customers, your home based studio is ready to soar. Remember that customer satisfaction is your best advertisement. Excellent photographic results are really what matters and people will forget about your improvised light reflectors and backdrops.
