Mastering Landscape Photography - 5 Tips to Use
65
Landscape photography is one of the most common subjects for beginning photographers. Shooting the beauty of a natural environment is so enticing, but if you have ever been disappointed that your image doesn’t do justice to what you saw, you aren’t alone. It may seem easy to point and shoot and expect great results, but there are tips and tricks to incorporate into your photography knowledge that will help you get the most out of your next outdoor landscape shoot.
Importance of Detail
Whether you are a beginner photographer or have been shooting for a while, you may or may not realize that one of the most important aspects of landscape photography is in the detail. Yes, even in landscape photography the more detail you capture, the better end result you will have. To gain maximum depth of field from the image and capture every tiny element, close your F-stop as much as possible and use a slow speed film that will give you longer exposures.
Decide on a Focal Point
Aiming your camera at the landscape and shooting may seem like the correct way to take a landscape photograph, but you will probably be disappointed in the end result. Make the most of your nature photo by deciding on an interesting or unique focal point in your shot. Look for a distinctive rock formation, lone stately tree or mountain peak and frame your photo accordingly. A focal point will draw the eye into your photo, adding excitement and appeal to your photographic effort.
Consider a Filter
When it comes to filters, you have many choices, and your choice will depend upon your type of photography. If you want to darken the sky and help build contrast in the colors of your image, use a polarizing filter. This will give you a more dramatic image and add to the overall appeal. Contrast in landscape photography adds interest to your photo and is achieved by the use of a filter.
Timing is Everything
In landscape photography, as in any other type of outdoor photography, the time of day in which you shoot can give you either great results or disappointing results. It will be the difference between a photo framed on your wall and one tucked into a drawer. Shooting at sunrise and sunset will give you very different looks for the same landscape. Determine which look you prefer and plan your outing accordingly.
Benefit by the Use of a Tripod
Tripods used to be bulky and awkward to carry with you, but thanks to advanced designs and lightweight materials, tripods are made to go where you go and can be easily tucked into a backpack. A tripod is a necessity if you are shooting with a slow film speed and long exposures. A tripod will prevent blur from an inadvertent movement, and a shutter speed lower than 60 will usually blur if you are not using a tripod to keep your camera steady. Another benefit of a tripod is you can take several shots of your image at different exposures without disturbing your camera.
Landscape photography is a great starting point to gain photographic experience. It is just you, your camera and nature’s beauty to shoot at your leisure. Make your first journey into photography more enjoyable with stunning imagery by having the right equipment and a desire to practice, practice, practice.
